Working Out While Sick

Many people keep the same vigorous routines when sick, but should you? During a serious illness, or minor cold, it is tempting to keep working out at the same speed as you are accustomed. However, your body is not working at its top speed when ill. Pulling back, or even temporarily stopping workouts, is often best. Read more to learn which is better for your particular situation.

Take a break

Working out while sick can prolong the length of an illness. It can also make you feel worse or damage the body and organs. Your body is not working at its peak. It is easier to become dehydrated, which can lead to kidney or brain damage. Viruses can attack the heart, and the stress induced by a workout can lead to heart problems or worse. If you feel truly horrible, it is often better to stop for a while then resume activity at a lower level, than to keep going and risk harm to your health.

Keep working

Short workouts or walks can do less harm than a full routine. A short walk around the block can do wonders to clear your head and make you feel less depressed. It can also clear your lungs and relieve anxiety. Walk comfortably to prevent becoming winded. If you can sing or talk while walking, then you are doing fine. If you find the need to stop and catch your breath, perhaps it is time to slow down or turn around and go home.

You may have concerns about losing your fitness level by stopping a workout routine when sick. Your primary concern is recovering from your sickness and supporting your body as it heals. Working out too hard can set you back further and cause real risks to your health.
