How to Work Out at Home

Working out at home is a fun, inexpensive way to stay in shape. While many people like to buy special exercise equipment, it is possible to work out at home with very little specialized equipment.

  1. First: Decide what you want to do

    The type of exercise you want to do influences the equipment you need. Do you want to lift weights? Do yoga? Stretch? Run? There are many different things you can do and each one of them needs something a little different.

  2. Second: Get your equipment

    If you do not have much experience working out, you may want to get a DVD. You can get DVDs for all sorts of activities including belly dance, step aerobics, yoga, tai chi, weight lifting and more. This can help enormously if you are unfamiliar with how to do the exercises or with proper form. You may also need a yoga mat, weights, resistance bands or other equipment. Of course, you can always do body weight exercises that only require a mat to protect your back. Body weight exercises include push ups, sit ups and squats.

  3. Third: Set aside time to work out

    The key to successfully working out at home is setting aside a specific time for working out, such as before going to work or right before dinner. Even if you can only work out one day a week, persistence is key. One day a week is better than no days a week. When you work out, always make sure to take 15 minutes to stretch and warm up prior to your exercise. After you are finished, take the time to stretch more to cool down. This helps you stay injury-free and can prevent soreness the following day.
